How To Replace Your Guard Dog

Unfortunately, people often give dogs too much credit for their ability to secure and protect.

Nathan and his dog, Hank, had been on many road trips together. Nathan was a photographer, and his work frequently allowed him to visit new places across the country. He was single, and therefore free to grab his duffle bag and head out the door on a moment’s notice.

Loneliness did finally creep up on Nathan a couple of years ago. It was hard for him to admit but, finally, Nathan asked his father for advice. "Get a dog," was his paternal recommendation. Seeing the surprise in Nathan’s face, his father explained that it was one thing to get married and start a family because the time was right; it was something else entirely to do it out of sheer loneliness. His father was right. Nathan loved his job, he loved to travel, and he wasn’t ready to give that up yet. Besides, Nathan needed a guard dog to watch over the house when he was away on trips.

So Hank moved in. Hank was no purebred, but he was a good dog and very eager to please. They did everything together. However, on Nathan’s first trip out of town, he felt a twinge of guilt as he gazed down into Hank’s sad eyes. The trip was short and Nathan was only gone one night, but he rushed right home. A week later, Nathan had to leave for three days. Upon his return, Nathan saw a police car outside his home. Nathan had asked the kid from next door to feed Hank in his absence, and now the boy rushed up to him. He explained that Nathan had been robbed sometime during the night.

The first thing Nathan thought of was Hank. He ran into the home and searched, finally finding Hank huddled in the bedroom closet. Nathan shook his head in relief and amusement.

The thief had made off with Nathan’s television, stereo, and computer, but was never caught. Nathan then invested in a 8 Channel Embedded DVR -

This unit could simply be plugged in and would become activated at the first sign of movement. Hank accompanied Nathan on his road trips, and their new monitoring device kept track of anything suspicious happening at home.

Dogs are great companions, but they can’t do a better job at explaining an event than a good DVR. Particularly when the DVR can record a full 960 plus hours of events at one time.
